Battle-Ready Valleyview

War is not good. However, one can't ignore marvelling some of those beautifully designed warships. MilitaryPhotos.Net is one of sites that has best photos taken, two of which are below:

Valleyview Power Plant

The last one is not a warship but you will notice the tower has similar battle-ready design. This is the photo of a natural gas-fired plant of ATCO Power in Valleyview. It provides system stability benefits for the Valleyview area and an important addition of capacity to meet Alberta’s growing power requirements.

According to their website, this station is an environmentally progressive, low nitrous oxide plant.

One things is for sure though. Valleyview is battle-ready for winter. Happy New Year to all!

Fundraising Event Held To Help Typhoon Victims In The Philippines

Recently celebrated in Valleyview was the 5th Multicultural Christmas Party held at the Paradise Inn & Suites last December 17th. It was a night of fun and laughter as each and everyone participated in the activities. Mayor of Valleyview Vern Lymburner was also there to grace the occasion. There wee 66 attendees that night.

On that same night, a devastating typhoon had been ravaging the Philippines. To date, the number of casualties has already reached the 1,000 mark and hundreds are still missing. This is considered the deadliest cyclone that hit the country in the last 12 years.

That night they were able to raise $288 CAD. It was donated to the Philippine Red Cross. The project was spearheaded by Grace De Luna.

For those who would want to help, Valleyview Happenings Team is accepting donations. Click on the 'Help Philippines' tab at the top.

Shop Wisely

Upon entering IGA-Valleyview Supermarket, I saw students piling up at the fruits section. I asked what's the buzz all about. They said that they have a school activity which aims to teach them to shop wisely. They were in the 10th grade at Hillside High School. Isn't that wonderful? I always buy this particular brand of soy milk that offers 75 cents off the regular price. I have obtained this coupon from cutting it painstakingly from the milk's container. I thought it's a good deal, only I forgot to bring it out when I paid.

Websaver.ca and Extreme Couponing Canada are some of the many sites that offer coupons. Be sure you check them out.

Something To Eat

Getting ready for your Christmas party? Visit our local groceries for ideas. I came across with this wonderful lady smiling at the Deli counter section of Co-Op Supermarket preparing a meat tray.

This looks delicious. It has three kinds of meat and three kinds of cheese.

Angels Seen Singing In Valleyview: Series1

The Valleyview Youth Community Choir headed by Ms. Barbara Hatch made joyful noises at the Red Willow Lodge last 12th of December. They were all cute, funny and seemed to have enjoyed their performance that cold night. Each and every song evoked from the audience laughter, admiration and tears as the group sang from their hearts.

One of the songs sang was the 'Twelve Days Of Christmas'. It was delightfully mixed with comic representations of the different gifts. According to Wikipedia, the twelve days in the song are the twelve days starting Christmas Day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas (December 26) (Boxing Day or St. Stephen's Day, as being the feast day of St. Stephen Protomartyr) to the day before Epiphany (January 6, or the Twelfth Day).

The Valleyview Youth Community Choir songs were the group's gift to the seniors at Lodge in recognition of the contributions they made for the community.

Angels Seen Singing In Valleyview: Series 2

Everyone from the Red Willow Lodge felt the spirit of Christmas when the Mennonites Singers visited and sang melodious, heavenly hymns and Christmas carols. Each break in between songs left one feeling high in spirits.

They sang more or less for an hour. Each and every minute reminds us how blessed we are to have our Lord Jesus Christ who was born and has risen from the dead to save the world from sin.

More on the Mennonites, from Discover The Peace Country website:
In 1931, the Mennonite community established the Ridge Valley School District. The name of the community came from that name and Ridgevalley was declared a hamlet in 1992.
It wasn't long after the first school was built, that many homes were built nearby also bringing a handful of businesses adding to the population. Ridgevalley is a hamlet in the Crooked Creek Area and many remember the Crooked Creek Store located along Highway 43. A large percentage of the population in the community is Mennonite. Located 10km south of Ridgevalley is a Hutterite Colony known for their market gardens and dairy operations.

The East Smoky Gas Co-op is located on the Ridgevalley Road in the centre of the Hamlet of Ridgevalley. It was originally an Egg Grading Station where farmers in the area came to grade their eggs for market. In 1973 the Gas Co-op was incorporated to bring natural gas to the farming community. The East Smoky Gas Co-op employs about 6 people and provides natural gas to customers in the Valleyview and Debolt area covering 1,800 km of pipeline.

Ridgevalley also has a few businesses that are home based operations. There are bed and breakfasts, a fabric store, Sunrise Memorials / Sign Shop and welding shop, all located within the area.
The main industry of the Ridgevalley area is Agriculture which includes cattle, grain and chicken farms. Near the community you can usually see the rolling prairie fields planted with grain as they turn to gold each fall.
This is the season when we are reminded to look back to our roots. Let us bring back our love to them by honoring our elders, grandparents and parents. Let us all share the love and peace to everyone.

Valleyview Toastmasters Club Holds Its Annual Fundraising Auction

Last November 29, 2011, Valleyview Toastmasters Club held its annual fundraising auction at the Valleyview Municipal Library. Valleyview Toastmasters is part of a bigger network that is Toastmasters International, regarded as the world leader in communication and leadership development. Since 1924, more than 4 million people around the world have become more confident speakers and leaders because of their participation.

The auction night was joined by another Toastmasters club from Fahler called Smoky River Sweet Talkers.

First, each salesperson was called to the lectern to give 2 to 3 minutes sales pitch extolling the product for auction.

The mini-speech counts towards points on the member's record. The order of the speaking was determined by the Toastmaster.

Lights were shown to signal the speaker every 2:00, 2:30 and 3:00 minutes.

After the break, the auctioning began. It was facilitated by the experienced Mr. Robin Lovelace who did a wonderful job in making auction night full of fun, thrill and excitement.

And the items that made the blockbuster? They were the National Geographic DVD that has a collection of every article and advertisement, and thousands of photographs—from 1888 through 2009, and the book Cream Soda, authored by the presenter's young daughter Suzanne Boulet. They both fetched for whopping $110.

The Club will have its holiday break and will resume by January 2012. Valleyview Toastmasters meets in the Gallery at the Valleyview Municipal Library each Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
